Are Your Gums in Good Health?
What is Gum Disease?
Healthy gums should appear pink and tightly fitted around the teeth. When you brush or floss, they should not bleed. If you notice bleeding without injury, it could be a sign of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease.
This bleeding is caused by the constant irritation of plaque and tartar on the teeth, which consists of food debris, saliva, and bacteria. The bacteria release toxins that trigger inflammation in the gums, leading to bleeding, attachment loss, and bone loss. This inflammation is the beginning of gum disease, which can progress to gingivitis or periodontal disease.
Gum disease is not just a dental issue - it has been linked to various systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, respiratory diseases, cancer, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, and more. Maintaining healthy gums is essential for overall health.
