The Advantages of Teeth Whitening for a Brighter Smile

Teeth whitening is a simple, non-invasive treatment designed to enhance the color of your natural tooth enamel, giving you a brighter, more confident smile.

Whiter teeth have become a top aesthetic concern for many patients, and there are several methods available to achieve this. The most common option is at-home whitening systems that provide noticeable results. Since whitening only affects natural tooth enamel, it’s important to consider replacing older fillings, crowns, or restorations after whitening to ensure they match your newly brightened teeth.

Keep in mind that teeth whitening isn’t permanent. Touch-ups may be necessary every few years, or more frequently if you smoke or consume staining beverages like coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening can address several causes of discoloration, including:
  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoride exposure during tooth development)
  • Natural wear of the outer tooth layer over time
  • Staining from medications (e.g., tetracycline)
  • Yellow or brown stains from lifestyle habits or aging

What Does Teeth Whitening Involve?

Teeth whitening typically requires two visits. During the first appointment, impressions (molds) of your teeth will be taken to create custom, clear plastic trays.

At your second visit, we’ll check the fit of the trays, making any necessary adjustments. The trays are then used with a special whitening solution, worn either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a few weeks, depending on the level of staining and desired whiteness. Some tooth sensitivity is common during the whitening process but will usually fade after you finish treatment.

You'll receive care instructions for the trays and tips on maintaining a bright smile, with regular dental visits recommended for optimal results.
